The Japanese Giant Hornet (Vespa mandarinia japonica) is a large hornet, adults can reach more than 4 centimetres (1.6 in) long, with a wingspan over 6 centimetres (2.4 in) long.
The Japanese Giant Hornet is considered to be most dangerous animal in Japan, around 40 people die every year as a result of its venom.
Their favored prey is European Honey Bees (Japanese beekeepers prefer to keep these bees, rather than Japanese Honey Bees as they produce more honey). A single hornet can kill 40 honeybees in a minute, a group of 30 hornets can decimate 30,000 bees in around 3 hours.
